The Cathedral!! Ahh. It’s enormous and intricate and pinkish and full of bells and wonderful things. It’s in/near the main town square so one of my favorite afternoon activities so far has been to get something to eat at one of the eight million little shops around it and eat in front of the cathedral or on its steps…there is always something new to notice about it. Favorite finds so far have been a life-size heron and a man getting spanked. (Really.) Apparently somewhere on it there is a statue of a beautiful young man and if you can peer around to see his back he turns into the devil. Some afternoon I’ll find it.
They started constructing the cathedral in 1176 and didn’t finish until the 1400s. Geez. I can’t imagine spending your life building or designing something that you knew you would never live to see finished….the last picture is the astronomical clock inside, which is also huge and intricate and beautiful. It doesn’t work anymore but apparently when it did it could calculate when lunar events and religious holidays and so on were going to be hundreds of years into the future, accurately….legend has it that its maker had his eyes gouged out after he finished so that he would never be able to reproduce it….
The first photo is amazing.
